ASEAN-UN Conference to seek world support for Myanmar

UNITED NATIONS, May 19 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will convene an ASEAN-UN International Pledging Conference in Myanmar on Sunday to seek further support for Myanmar hit by Cyclone Nargis early this month, it was announced here on Monday In a joint statement, the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chair of the ASEAN announced that an ASEAN-UN International Pledging Conference will be held on Sunday, May 25, in Yangon, Myanmar, with member states of the UN being invited to participate in the conference at the ministerial level. "The conference will focus on the needs of those affected by the cyclone, and seek international support and financial assistance for the international humanitarian response to meet the most urgent challenges, as well as longer term recovery efforts," the statement said. The co-convenors also called on the international community to rise to the occasion and translate their solidarity and sympathy into concrete commitments to help the people of Myanmar emerge from the tragedy and rebuild their lives.
