LAGOS, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced the commencement of its indefinite strike action from Monday, according to local media report on Monday.
Nelson Onem, NUT deputy president, told newsmen in Abuja that principals and teachers of primary, secondary, unity and command schools would from Monday withdraw their services.
"There will be no teaching, invigilating, or marking of both internal and external examination. No state of the federation is exempted from the directives of the NUT," he said.
He said this was due to the latest decision of the Federal Executive Council to the effect that the implementation of the Teachers Salary Structure (TSS) would be subjected to another round of so called stake holder discussion.
"The issuance of the circular by the National Salaries and Wages Commission is the necessary administrative step towards the implementation of the TSS," the minister said.
"Having reneged on the issuance of the enabling circular creating the TSS, the Federal Government has given us no option but to immediately resume the suspended strike," Onem said.
Onem appealed to parents not to allow their wards to go to school, while parents of wards in boarding institutions were urged to arrange to bring them home immediately.
He also called on fellow Nigerians to prevail on government to wake up and give teachers their dues, saying "as a nation we cannot continue to insist that teachers reward is in heaven."
