MOSCOW, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Russia's planned shipment of sophisticated missile systems to Iran would affect the balance of power in the Middle East, Israeli President Shimon Peres said Wednesday.
Peres said during a video conference in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi that the matter had been discussed during talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.
Peres, who was on an informal visit to Russia, his first trip since assuming office in July 2007, said Medvedev "promised to consider the matter."
In March, a high-ranking official with Russia's Federal Service of Military-Technical Cooperation said Russia has not yet delivered the sophisticated S-300 air defense systems to Iran.
The deal with Iran was arranged two years ago and Russia has said it has no intention of giving up the estimated hundred-million-U.S. dollar contract.
Israel has urged Russia not to deliver the medium-range surface-to-air missile systems to Iran, alleging the Islamic republic wants to develop a military nuclear program.
Tehran insists its nuclear program is solely intended for civilian purposes.
